MANDEVILLE, LA  – One of the things that modern conservatives have forgotten to do is to stop, enjoy, then support the good things in life. We are instead trained from political birth to think of everything in political terms. Once you are baptized in the Reagan waters this is the way things are but it wasn’t always like this. Early American conservatives were actually known for their promotion of the arts and would have plenty to admire this spring in New Orleans. Check out today’s Church Doctrine for more…

One of the things that modern conservatives have forgotten to do is to stop, enjoy, then support the good things in life. We are instead trained from political birth to think of everything in political terms. Once you are baptized in the Reagan waters this is the way things are but it wasn’t always like this. Early American conservatives were actually known for their promotion of the arts and would have plenty to admire this spring in New Orleans.

Last weekend I participated with 58 teams in the 4th annual “Hogs For The Cause” barbecue and fundraiser at City Park. The “Cause” part of “Hogs” is raising money for pediatric brain cancer and each team is required to donate pork dishes to feed 250. To see that much generosity on a beautiful spring day was truly a grand experience that I hope many more will attend next year.

Right now another delicacy is in season, crawfish and though I am not sure if Ronald Reagan ever had any that doesn’t make ‘dem mudbugs any less tasty. To see what so many Louisianans cook with their crawfish is another beautiful thing. From etouffees and pistolettes to 7 million blends of boiled; crawfish show the tradition and love we have for what outsiders call “cajun cooking.”

Then there’s our most under appreciated local beauty: music and I am not talking about Dr. John. I’m talking the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra which most folks don’t even know still plays, what a pity. Plato said that “Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe”, indeed. As ObamaCare and Republican primaries consume nearly all the time and energy & time of today’s Cajun conservatives it is imperative that we remember the beautiful things we want to enjoy that the political things put in jeopardy.
