Mandeville, LA  – We must be in the summer doldrum, news-cycle, because the “big news” today is that the New Orleans Saints’ tight end Jimmy Graham has signed his new $40 million contract with the team. Graham tweeted that he’s “…bleeding black and gold this morning! Thank you WhoDatNation for all the support”. I don’t know what Graham’s bleeding but I can tell you what the State that subsidizes his millions is: A Superdome full of red ink, so let’s try and put the matter in perspective.

It wasn’t that long ago the City of New Orleans admitted they could not afford their own jail or Police Department. A mere 6 weeks ago, I informed this audience that the State of Louisiana is currently $18.1 BILLION in the hole to current and future retirees. Last year, Kaare Johnson and I both commented on a report that Louisiana’s road and bridge infrastructure was collapsing and in need of nearly $12 BILLION in repairs. Meanwhile Forbes Magazine reported that Saints Owner Tom Benson will earn over $400 MILLION by 2025 from subsidies paid by the taxpayers of Louisiana to the Saints. Add all this up and some should be asking “why are you alone making headlines that point out the horrific mis-ordering of this state’s priorities, Mike?”

Some Who Dats will say they don’t care about the roads, don’t care about the jails and don’t care if (sic) “they mom and ‘dem” don’t get their pensions “from ‘da state” as long as “da Saints bring home anothuh trophy, dawlin’.” While I wish to see another Lombardi Trophy in New Orleans too, there has to be a limit to what the State is willing to force its citizens to pay for it. That is a change that the public must instigate and with all the ecstasy oozing from Twitter over the Graham signing, you can expect lots of flat tires traveling Louisiana’s roads to the next Saints game, before that happens. Mike Church is a New Orleans native and a radio host appearing daily on the SiriusXM Patriot Channel. He is an author and editor of “Patrick Henry-American Statesman” and is the writer and director of 7 Docudramas on American history including “The Spirit of ‘76” and the recently released “Times That try Men’s Souls-Washington’s Crossing”. It’s about time Republicans and Libertarians in the state turn to Bobby Jindal to ask “Why?”
