Mandeville, LA – Exclusive Audio and Transcript – You can fire football coaches that are black if they fail to bring you to a Super Bowl.  You can fire basketball coaches and baseball coaches.  Why can’t you fire presidents?  You can’t fire presidents because presidents have their hands on the purse strings.  Presidents wield power beyond that with which sports figures wield power.  Are we saying that we no longer trust a nation’s first black power wielder with four more years of wielding that power simply — wait a minute.  “We’ve got to give the guy another chance.  Come on, now.  If America is anything, it’s a continuing story of equality.” Check out the rest in today’s audio and transcript…

Mike:  Many of you are conflicted over how it is humanly possible for President Obama to be beating Mitt and Paul in public opinion polls, especially in swing states.  Like in Ohio, this is an eight- and nine-point race.  Virginia is the same deal, Florida, 4.5-, 5.5-point race.  Still, Obama seems to be carrying the day in these swing states, and by a point or two nationally, pending the outcome of tomorrow night’s debate, although does this really sway anything tomorrow night?  Seriously, do you think anything is really going to happen that changes people’s minds?  If you don’t know who it is that you support by now, then please, don’t muck it up for the rest of us that do.  [mocking] “I was going to see if . . ..”  No, you weren’t.

This idea here that there are these last-minute voters that break this way or break that way, I would suggest to you, that they’re probably just holding out to see which of the candidates is going to be the best host for the parasite that they are.  There may be some of you that actually have convictions and are conflicted as to whether or not you’re going to vote for Mitt or whether or not you’re going to vote third party.  That is a matter of conscience.  Only you and your God and logic and reason can work that out.  That, I understand.  The rest of the people out there, there’s no decision to be made here, unless it is, again, are you waiting for one candidate to out Santa Claus another?

There’s something else that’s at play here.  How is it possible that in this economic cistern sewer that we find ourselves in, of our own making by the way, that the president could even have a chance to be reelected?  George Will has stumbled upon this.  There was a tweet out today, AG, the gentleman who says, “Is George Will saying Obama is too big to fail,” although he didn’t use the word big.  Yes, that’s basically what George Will is saying.  Here’s how I put it in today’s Pile of Prep.  “Maybe voters are not yet ready to deal with the guilt of firing the first black president.”  Do you want to be known to Chris Matthews and the rest of the MSNBC crowd you’re the rotgut racist pigs that kicked Obama out of office simply because he’s a black guy?  You know that’s going to be the narrative.  If Governor Romney is to win, that is going to be the narrative: it was a racist, hick, hayseed country that kicked the first black guy out of office.  There won’t be any incriminations over issues or items or personalities or anything.  It will just be pure, unadulterated racism.  George Will writes about this today.  I read this earlier.  Check this out.

Obama’s administration is in shambles, yet he is prospering politically.  This may not, however, entirely be evidence of the irrationality of the electorate.  Something more benign may be at work.  A significant date in the nation’s civil rights progress involved an African American baseball player named Robinson, but not Jackie.  The date was Oct. 3, 1974, when Frank Robinson, one of the greatest players in history, was hired by the Cleveland Indians as the major leagues’ first black manager.  But an even more important milestone of progress occurred June 19, 1977, when the Indians fired him.  That was colorblind equality.  Managers get fired all the time.  The fact that the Indians felt free to fire Robinson – who went on to have a distinguished career managing four other teams – showed that another racial barrier had fallen: Henceforth, African Americans, too, could enjoy the God-given right to be scapegoats for impatient team owners or incompetent team executives.

Perhaps a pleasant paradox defines this political season: That Obama is African American may be important, but in a way quite unlike that darkly suggested by, for example, MSNBC’s excitable boys and girls who, with their (at most) one-track minds and exquisitely sensitive olfactory receptors, sniff racism in any criticism of their pin-up.  Instead, the nation, which is generally reluctant to declare a president a failure – thereby admitting that it made a mistake in choosing him – seems especially reluctant to give up on the first African American president.  If so, the 2012 election speaks well of the nation’s heart, if not its head.

Mike:  I think that’s viable, don’t you?

AG:  Yeah.  I was just wondering, do you think Will is kind of feeding into that mindset by talking about it?  You’re kind of damned if you do, damned if you don’t in a sense.  You can’t let one side frame and shape the narrative all themselves.  Do you end up feeding into the idea of racial politics by putting forth that editorial?  At the same time, you feel like you have to point out that we need, as a society, to get past the idea of you can’t vote for another guy because you’d be un-electing the first black president.  It’s somewhat catch-22, I think.

Mike:  You can fire football coaches that are black if they fail to bring you to a Super Bowl. We’ve got to give the guy another chance.  Come on, now.  If America is anything, it’s a continuing story of equality.

When you bring this up, what you’re basically doing is setting up that we jettisoned government to secure our liberties and execute a few very exquisitely defined, enumerated powers a long time ago and now we have this ever-bending, ever-changing, gelatinous, nebulous blob — I don’t even know what to call this thing.  It’s a giant bowl of Jell-O that purports to rule over 309 million people, all for the purpose of what?  It’s not securing anyone’s liberties anymore.  You sent me a story last night saying that civil liberties and the encroachment on them have gone up 60 percent since Obama took office.  Obama hasn’t secured anyone’s liberties, has he?

AG:  No.  The amount of electronic monitoring going on under the Obama administration has gone up starkly as compared to the Bush administration and previous ones.

Mike:  And it’s continuing to go up.  You have American sheeple out there saying they’re comfortable with drones flying over their houses.  Why in God’s holy name would you tell someone that?  I’m not.  You’re moving out to suburbia to try to save some money on rent.  You might have to move out to suburbia to get cover of trees.
