Mandeville, LA – Exclusive Transcript – He’s reading this book and he used to think that the millennials were going to be able to work this out.  The millennials aren’t going to be able to work this out, and the reason the millennials aren’t going to be able to work this out — when we die, it’s over.  When we hand the reins of power over to them, it’s over.  Anarchy and chaos, Lord of the Flies.  Check out today’s transcript for the rest….

Mike:  Is that the one I sent you?

David Simpson:  I’ve got two, “Efforts to Silence Clergy” by Kilpatrick and then Michael Brendan Dougherty wrote one.

Mike:  “The kids are not all right.”  That is Michael Brendan Dougherty.  Brendan Dougherty’s point is, as he’s reading this book about the kids not being all right, it’s about millennials.

Simpson:  It had selfie in the title.

Mike:  The Selfie Vote.  He’s reading this book and he used to think that the millennials were going to be able to work this out.  The millennials aren’t going to be able to work this out, and the reason the millennials aren’t going to be able to work this out — when we die, it’s over.  When we hand the reins of power over to them, it’s over.  Anarchy and chaos, Lord of the Flies.  If the phones still work and the apps still work, it’ll be Hinged and Tinder all over the place.  There will be no marriages.  There will be very few children because they’ll be very inconvenient, lest one of them happens to survive an abortion.  This is the future.

All of this is as a result of — at the end of last hour before you got here, I had posited — the gentleman and I were talking about — we got on the subject of Marx.  I said: Your average conservative allegedly intellectual — and he’s not.  That’s not a boast and that’s not me knocking him.  I’m just saying they’re not thinking intellectually any longer.  They’re thinking ideological, which is dangerous.  Nazis thought ideologically.  Communist think ideologically.  This idea [mocking] “We’re going to have a new nationalism under Trump,” no, you’re probably going to have something you’re not going to like, and the rest of the world is not going to like it either.  Marx doesn’t happen if Rousseau doesn’t happen.

I’ll go back through the process.  Rousseau doesn’t happen if that madman Immanuel Kant doesn’t happen.  Kant doesn’t write if Hobbes and Locke don’t write.  Maybe you throw Bacon in there and Hume.  Those guys don’t write if the original sinner, Descartes, who allegedly was a Catholic at the time that he wrote, if Descartes doesn’t say “I think therefore I am” and all the rest of the nonsense about the rejection of ultimate moral authority.  Basically what Descartes was saying was, “No, I am the ultimate moral authority.”

Simpson:  And also the judge of reality, right?  In other words, he inverts the reality.

Mike:  Right.  So I’m the ultimate moral authority, and I invert the reality of — why don’t you explain inverting reality?

Simpson:  He doesn’t exist because he thinks.  In other words, he’s making his mind the judgment of reality.  He is therefore he’s thinking.  He flipped it.

Mike:  How did St. Thomas say it?  Same thing?  St. Thomas said, “I am.”

Simpson:  And that’s what God says.  I am the one who’s always been.  That what God said.

Mike:  Before Abraham, I am.

Simpson:  And then when he gives all of us subsidiary being, then we exist and we engage reality because he’s given us that being.  Descartes doubted all the way back.  Then you say, “How do I know that I am?”  Instead of saying, “I trust God who gave me being,” I can’t trust that.  How do I know?  I think.  He flipped it.  Now our minds become the judge of all reality.  That persisted — like you said, that’s a great example of all those writers who came afterwards.  People say, you hear that thing “ideas have consequences.”  People say: No, it doesn’t, big deal.  Some philosopher out there —

Mike:  It’s a problem.

Simpson:  It creates a psyche and a process by which we start destroying all things around us if we don’t think properly.

Mike:  And what was it that — we always try to avoid the theological, but Kant was basically saying: I don’t care what the pope says.  I don’t care what the built-up, 1500-year-old Magisterium says of how I ought to behave.  I care about what I want to do and how I think I ought to behave.  This is my life and my body and my mind and I should be free to do that.  It’s a rejection of a moral authority.  There has to be one.  This idea that there can be 38,000 of them causes the balkanization that we have today, with no one being able to agree.  If we go back to the original error, then we’re right at Rene Descartes door.  Descartes is the one that plants that seed — Benjamin Wiker wrote a book, 10 Books that Screwed Up the World: And 5 Others that Didn’t Help.  He starts with Descartes.  He starts with, the first line of the book and the preface is: Ideas have consequences.  He goes through your argument where you said: People say it’s just one guy.  Some philosopher said this and the other.  No.  When you commit it to print, print survives generations.
