Mandeville, LA – Exclusive Video and Audio – Before the 17th Amendment, the Senators were elected by the State Legislature and served at the behest of the State… which meant that they didn’t serve as long because their job wasn’t as “enjoyable” as serving the people. So the bill that Senator Nicely of Tennessee is proposing will, not only return the power of the State Legislatures to elect the Senators, but will also act as a “Term Limiting” bill since we’ve had half as many Senators in the 100 years since the 17th Amendment as we did in the 100 years before. This is how the framers of the Constitution meant for the Senate and the Congress to be, one (Congress) would be elected by the people and represent the people and the other (the Senate) would be elected by the states and represent their interests. And to keep government from expanding, not much would ever get done, but when it did bills would be taken to the President and he would sign them.
