The authentic linen paper, hand stitched binding, printing press printing and workmanship are as close to the actual process used in 1866 as is possible. Master book restorer Ed Stansell explains the laborious process used to make this replica a genuine copy of the original.

History Behind the Snake:

The original newspaper that carried Franklin’s “Join or Die” cartoon recently sold at auction for $100,000

The segmented snake drawn by Benjamin Franklin has become the symbol of resistance to the corrupt government or Leviathan as we call it on the show.  It was first published in his Pennsylvania Gazette on May 9, 1754 and was part of Franklin’s promotion of his “Albany Plan”.

Franklin reasoned that the colonists ought to be at least as smart as the Indian tribes in oirganizing their political affairs against the French. “It would be a very strange Thing if six Nations of ignorant Savages should be capable of forming a Scheme for such an Union, and be able to execute it in such a Manner as that it has subsisted for Ages, and appears indissoluble; and yet a like Union should be impracticable for ten or a Dozen English Colonies, to whom it is more necessary, and must be more advantageous; and who cannot be supposed to want an equal Understanding of their Interests.”

The original publication by the Gazette is the earliest known pictorial representation of colonial union produced by a British colonist in America.  It is a snake severed into eighths, with each segment labeled with the initials of a British American Colony or region.  New England was represented as one segment, rather than the four colonies it was at that time. In addition, Delaware and Georgia were omitted completely. When the cartoon appeared during the American Revolution a point was added to the tail of the snake and was labeled “G.”, thereby adding Georgia to the “union”.

History Behind the Snake:

The original newspaper that carried Franklin’s Join or Die cartoon recently sold for $100,000 at auction

The segmented snake drawn by Ben Franklin has become the symbol of resistance to the corrupt government or Leviathan as we call it on the show.  It was first published in his Pennsylvania Gazette on May 9, 1754 and was part of Franklin’s promotion of his “Albany Plan”.

Franklin reasoned that the colonists ought to be at least as smart as the Indian tribes in oirganizing their political affairs against the French. “It would be a very strange Thing if six Nations of ignorant Savages should be capable of forming a Scheme for such an Union, and be able to execute it in such a Manner as that it has subsisted for Ages, and appears indissoluble; and yet a like Union should be impracticable for ten or a Dozen English Colonies, to whom it is more necessary, and must be more advantageous; and who cannot be supposed to want an equal Understanding of their Interests.”

The original publication by the Gazette is the earliest known pictorial representation of colonial union produced by a British colonist in America.  It is a snake severed into eighths, with each segment labeled with the initials of a British American Colony or region.  New England was represented as one segment, rather than the four colonies it was at that time. In addition, Delaware and Georgia were omitted completely. When the cartoon appeared during the American Revolution a point was added to the tail of the snake and was labeled “G.”, thereby adding Georgia to the “union”.

What was the importance of this election?

The election of 1800 was one of the most controversial in American history, and was marked with intrigue, betrayals, and a tie in the electoral college.  The 1800 election was the first time candidates campaigned, though the campaigning was very subdued by modern standards.  The conflicted result of the 1800 election revealed a serious flaw in the US Constitution.  The fractious outcome of the 1800 election led to the passage and ratification of the Twelfth Amendment, which changed the way the electoral college functioned.

Yuri Maltsev received a doctorate from the Institute of Labor Research in Moscow, Russia and served on the senior team of Soviet economists on Gorbachev’s economic reform programs. He is a professor of economics at Carthage College and has lectured around the world. Rob Williams is the editor and publisher of Vermont Commons: Voices of Independence, an independent multimedia news journal. He is also professor of media/communications at Champlain College.

Were I to assign to this term a precise and definite idea, I would say, purely and simply, it means a government by its citizens in mass, acting directly and personally, according to rules established by the majority; and that every other government is more or less republican, in proportion as it has in its composition more or less of this ingredient of the direct action of the citizens. Such a government is evidently restrained to very narrow limits of space and population. I doubt if it would be practicable beyond the extent of a New England township.”

Henry who made famous the phrase, “Give me liberty, or give me death” has a starring role in the feature. His arguments against ratification, beautifully portrayed by voice actor Jean Hetherington, sound more like prophecy than they do debate.

Clyde N. Wilson is best known for his expertise on the life and writings of John C. Calhoun, having recently compiled all his papers in twenty-eight volumes. He is the M.E. Bradford Distinguished Chair of the Abbeville Institute, an adjunct faculty member of the libertarian Ludwig von Mises Institute, and an affiliated scholar of the League of the South Institute, the research arm of the League of the South. In 1994 Wilson was an original founder of the League of the South.

If At First You Don’t Secede…Try, Try Again! T-shirt is a brown 100% pre-shrunk cotton shirt by Gildan.

The Thomas Jefferson quote is from an 1804 letter TJ wrote to his friend Joseph Preistley. Jefferson always believed in secession and was convinced the states would not stay together in perpetuity.

You have successfully and completely pulverized Mr. Adams’ system of orders, and his opening the mantle of republicanism to every government of laws, whether consistent or not with natural right. Indeed, it must be acknowledged, that the term republic is of very vague application in every language. Witness the self-styled republics of Holland, Switzerland, Genoa, Venice, Poland. Were I to assign to this term a precise and definite idea, I would say, purely and simply, it means a government by its citizens in mass, acting directly and personally, according to rules established by the majority; and that every other government is more or less republican, in proportion as it has in its composition more or less of this ingredient of the direct action of the citizens. Such a government is evidently restrained to very narrow limits of space and population. I doubt if it would be practicable beyond the extent of a New England township.”

Not only does he ask the questions that need to be asked, he also talks to the best men and women of our age. Anyone who has had the privilege of listening to Mike on his radio show knows hismodus operandi. He listens, he questions, he learns, he responds, and he listens some more. Behind his views stand the greats of western and American civilization.

Most importantly for our society, though, he reminds us—as members of this republic (Latin for “res publica” the “good thing” or the “common good”; not to be confused with the “greater good”)—what it means to be serious and meaningful citizens and what it means to be at our best. I certainly don’t mean to gush too much, but it’s hard not to do so when speaking or writing of Mike. He’s that important to our future—and, byour, I mean the citizens of the present and of the future of America as well as of the West.

In his stunning new animated film, “The Road to Independence,” Mike Church challenges the prevailing notions, such as they are, regarding the American Founding.  Neither Abraham Lincoln nor Ronald Reagan, he notes, were of the Founding generation, but, within the political right especially, these two men greatly have fundamental shaped our understanding of 1776 and 1787.  And, from the opening of the film to its end, Church points out that the prevailing interpretations of the Declaration of Independence—especially if focused on “all men are created equal”—are, at best, misinterpretations of the text and of the historical moment in which the text was written.  He does this through Jefferson’s own words from a 1821 interview.  Indeed, the entire film is based on original research and primary documents, all of which reveal the essence of the Revolution.
