Freedom Is Not Easy And Conservatism Is Even More Difficult AbbyMcGinnis

Begin Mike Church Show Transcript Mike:  Think about something here.  He was talking about the neocons.  I call them decepticons.  Of course, the con part of the word is conservative.  Yesterday in the House of Representin’, we received the news that there’s a new coalition of “conservative” Republicans that have gotten this far-right cabal together called the Freedom Caucus.  Of course, if you surf on over to Slate magazine’s website, you’ll find the headline, “House Conservatives Form ‘Freedom Caucus’ as Right-Wing Rebellion Continues.”  Saturday there was the Freedom Summit.  Now we have a Freedom Caucus.  I’m thinking of the Sicilian in the movie Princess Bride, Mandy Patinkin rather, when he says: You keep using that word.  I don’t think that word means what you think it means.  I don’t think freedom means what many people think that it means and are trying to apply it, especially from the conservative experience, if there is such a thing any longer. Just a quick refresher course, won’t take a minute or so.  The refresher course goes something like this.  If you’re of the conservative viewpoint — as I used to ask the question: What is it that you’re trying to conserve?  You have to identify traditions, institutions, etc., etc. that you’re trying to conserve.  If you’re then going to actually get about the work and the business of conserving these things, this is going to take work, real work.  This is going to take scholarship, real scholarship.  It’s going to take composition, skilled composition.  It’s going to take oratory, skilled oratory.  It will actually take actual construction, meaning with hammers and such, and actual maintenance as well. In other words, there’s works to be done, lots of works to be done.  That doesn’t sound like something that liberates anyone.  In other words, if you’re actually for conserving things and you want to conserve them because you want to conserve freedom, you’re not really conserving freedom.  You’re conserving responsibility.  They ought to call themselves the Responsibility Caucus.  But just say the word freedom and all is forgotten, Joseph Schumpeter once said.  It’s a word that is used and abused.

There was talk way back in the early 2000’s, when the Republican Party was running off the rails with spending, that there needed to be what they called at the time an Austerity Caucus.  Certainly when President Obama was running $1.1 trillion deficits, or when Congress was presenting him bills he was signing to make $1.1 trillion deficits, I remember talk of an Austerity Caucus.  I would choose austerity over freedom, I guess is the point.  Austerity then would require me to actually stop doing some of the things that conservatives shouldn’t be doing to start with.  But make no mistake about it, the work of conservatism is hard work, actual conservatism.  It’s not easy.
