Highvalley,
Talking in person can be frightening. The best way I have found is be prepared. write down your questions, some officials are very intimidating or abrupt. Start by telling them you are deciding who to vote for if they are unsure who you will vote for they are a little more receptive.
I also like the email\letter route because you get a response in WRITING that you can use to call them on or to compare to another candidate, here is the email I wrote to Rep Poppell
"Mr Poppell,
As a resident of Vero Beach I have some questions for you. If you want me to consider voting for you then you will answer them.
> 1: Do you believe that it is my responsibility to pay for the
irresponsibility of others? There are people having children who can not afford them, engaging in behaviors that can lead to disease, and people living well above their means. Do you feel that I have ANY responsibility to support and/or provide for these people?
>
> 2: I work hard, sometimes 60 to 70 hours a week, I have investments that I spent hours, day's, and in some cases month's researching. Do you feel that anyone has any right to what I have earned?
and finally
3: Do you feel that the Government should be small and unobtrusive? or should the Government run everything and everyone from cradle to casket?

> Thank You
Martin Fee "
Which prompted him to respond with
"Dear Mr. Fee,
Thank you for you email.
As a fiscal conservative and a business owner, I believe in smaller government and many times that government can be the problem - not the solution. I, too, have worked 60 - 80 hours a week and still do and understand and appreciate anyone that works hard to get ahead and not count on the government to do it for them.
I also believe that people should take responsibility for their behavioral patterns and that hardworking citizens should not get stuck paying for the irresponsible lifestyles of others. I feel that helping people that are truly in need from circumstances beyond their control is a part that government and charitable societies can lend a hand, but not because someone has been grossly irresponsible.
Thank you for you inquiry -- contact me should you have further questions.
Ralph Poppell
My same questions went to the Democrat candidate. He did not respond and therefor did not get my vote. He also lost the election.
One last piece of advice do not just go by Republican or Democrat there are a lot of Republicans who should be Liberal Democrats and there are some Democrats who are REAL Democrats and not Liberal ones. ask all candidates the same questions and vote for the one who represents YOUR values and beliefs.
If I can ever be of service to you please don't hesitate to ask that goes to everyone here. If there is something you would rather not put on the Board here email me at
