Mandeville, LA – Exclusive Transcript – I still have yet to locate — other than myself, Matt Walsh, and a writer from Chronicles Magazine — anyone that has identified and pointed out that there are a lot of things that Mr. Sterling has done.  A mere 40 or 50 years ago, if we were to go back in time a bit, there would have been other things that he would have been publicly excoriated for.  The chief one among them would have been hanging out with the adulteress and making adultery such a public spectacle.  But no one cares about that any longer.”  Check out today’s transcript for the rest…

Mike:  I still have yet to locate — other than myself, Matt Walsh, and a writer from Chronicles Magazine — anyone that has identified and pointed out that there are a lot of things that Mr. Sterling has done.  A mere 40 or 50 years ago, if we were to go back in time a bit, there would have been other things that he would have been publicly excoriated for.  The chief one among them would have been hanging out with the adulteress and making adultery such a public spectacle.  But no one cares about that any longer.  Well, I shouldn’t say no one.  Few care about it any longer.

In any event, for those of you that thought, [mocking] “This is a one and done.  So they got rid of the old man.  He’s ruined.  So what?  He’s 80 years old.  The NBA will just move on.  We’ll hear nothing more of this.”  Oh, really?

Charles Pierce was involved in a discussion on PBS Reports in the evening, the video feed that PBS sends out.  Pierce got into a discussion.  Don’t say you weren’t warned.  Don’t say that the law of unforeseen consequences does not apply to these items and issues and these events of such great cultural obsession.  What’s now being talked about — I have two stories here today, one from the Detroit News and one from PBS.

[private FP-Monthly|FP-Yearly|FP-Yearly-WLK|FP-Yearly-So76]

The Detroit News story carries the implication that there are other professional sports franchise owners that are now living in mortal fear of their professional lives, wondering who Kevin Johnson and the rest of the zero-tolerance gang is going to target next.

The DeVos family that owns the Orlando Magic down in Orlando, Florida, unbeknownst to most, the DeVos family are in support of traditional marriage.  As such, they have donated some of their substantial fortune to advertising campaigns in states where traditional marriage legislation has been put on the books or has been a ballot initiative.  The DeVos family has participated in this much like Brendan Eich, the former CEO who was kicked out of his own company for doing the unthinkable, which was supporting those supporting Proposition 8 in California back in 2008.  The DeVos family is doing what Eich did times factors of thousands.  This has now been learned and you’re going to hear this — I’m going to play you this digital media file from PBS evening news last night.  You’re going to hear Charles Pierce talking about how: Let’s see if the NBA does what’s right now and goes after the DeVos family and tries to force them to sell the Orlando Magic because we can’t have traditional marriage-supporting Christians owning NBA teams.  Folks, you wouldn’t believe it until you heard it and you’re about to hear it.

Gwen Ifill: Well, let me ask Charlie Pierce about that. Is this something which you sense will go on beyond what it is now? As you’ve written, this is not the first time, for instance, that we’ve heard of Donald Sterling making comments like this and nothing happened before.

Charlie Pierce: No, Donald Sterling has been a cancer on this league merely from a competitive standpoint since he owned the team. He has acted out his racism before in his private business, which is basically being a landlord, and that’s being very kind. Otherwise, I think what Bill is talking about, if it’s going to go forward, then this can’t be the only time the players get together and decide to take a stand on this, okay?  If the players are going to have an advantage now, they have to push it. For example, they have to lean on the league to make this sale happen. It is unfathomable to me that Donald Sterling might still own the team next fall. That can’t be allowed. If Adam Silver is serious, that can’t be allowed to happen.

On another venture, what does Adam Silver now do, for example, with the DeVos family in Orlando, which funds anti-gay candidates and anti-gay issue ads all over the country, as well as owning the Orlando Magic? Does he talk to them? This is an entirely new world. And if we’re going to step into it, let’s step all the way into it.

[end audio clip]

Mike:  Oh, for heaven’s sake.  So the DeVos family supports traditional marriage.  Too bad.  You cannot own the Orlando Magic anymore, and the NBA players now need to get involved in it.  [mocking] “They’ve got to step their game up.”  I can never keep up with all these names.  Eric, who’s the homosexual that came out that’s an NBA player?  What’s his name?

Eric:  Jason Collins.

Mike:  I thought it was Jason Collins.  So now Jason Collins and those that are, I would suppose, friendly to Mr. Collins and the coming out of professional clippers-sterling-internal-croppedbasketball players and what have you, now you know what you gotta do.  You’ve got your marching orders.  You have got whackos that are Christians.  They have supported “anti-gay” — I don’t even know what that is — candidates.  They have supported “anti-gay marriage initiatives” in several states.  You cannot own a professional sports franchise in the United States and have that sort of sick, twisted, nuclear family or holy family point of view.  Out with you and off with your head.  Where does it go from there?  What other villains might we find?  What other telephone conversations might now be recorded?

To insinuate or believe [mocking] “Mike, you ought to be talking about stuff that really matters.”  Oh, really?  Just wait until they get to your profession and they find out that you have done something like, oh, I don’t know, donated to a candidate that was pro-traditional marriage.  You just happen to be the owner of a store that’s in a franchise, you just happen to own a franchise.  Don’t laugh.  [mocking] “Come on, now, that could never happen.”  Really?

[/private]

With all the franchises out there, you don’t think that once this snowball gets rolling down the hill, and once this mob gets drunk with the blood that they’re able to extract from people, you don’t think that they won’t try to use this influence, this extortion over the administrators of large corporations that make their millions and billions by selling those franchises?  Don’t forget, franchisees are always, in most of these instances anyway, they’re always beholden to what the central franchising authority tells them to do.

So if you took great joy in sending me all sorts of rules from the NBA and showing me, [mocking] “You don’t know what you’re talking about.  Donald Sterling was magnificent samgoverned by NBA rules governing ownership.”  Oh, gee, Mr. Smart-aleck, do you own a franchise?  Are you governed by rules?  Do you have to abide and obey rules that govern your behavior as the owner of a franchise?  Guess what, pal?

Your Donald Sterling day is coming, too, baby.  They’re coming for all of us.  Remember the Pastor Niemoller poem from the 1930s?  First they came for the boot maker and I said nothing.  Then they came for the . . . it’s happening, folks.  We live in a dark, despicable, Godless time.  These people have elevated themselves as gods.  They are using the powers that they have gained through the force and power of government and using it in godlike fashion.  Once you get drunk with this, you don’t stop.
