This Day In Founding Fathers History – 16 July

This Day in Founding Fathers History - Where we bring you important dates in the lives and history of the Founding Generation. In 1790 on this day, “An Act for establishing the temporary and permanent Seat of the Government of the United States,” otherwise called The Residence Act, was signed into law by President Washington. The act called for a “district of territory” no more than ten square miles be chosen for the capital.

Ferrara – Democracy Fail, How’s Taxation WITH Representation Working?

"When that idea [democracy] is introduced, you have coming into the political structure of a society this whole notion of representation, that government is a compact between the people and the government as established through their representatives. The great irony of representation is that over time it swallows up everything and destroys true liberty. If anybody doubts that, let me ask a simple question: How has taxation with representation worked out for us?"

How Edward Snowden Is Like Thomas Jefferson – Clip of The Day

Mandeville, LA – Exclusive Transcript – "Thomas Jefferson was Vice President of the United States of America in 1798. When John Adams put his signature on the illegal monstrosity that was the Alien and Sedition Acts, what did Jefferson do? Did he ask for a redress of grievance to John Adams? Did he appeal to the inspector general: Dude, you can’t enforce this? What did he do? Jefferson initiated and engaged in what some people call a seditious campaign to try and stop the implementation of the Alien and Sedition Acts in his own home state of Virginia." The Founding Fathers Weren’t Gods, And Neither Are Modern Politicians

Mandeville, LA – Exclusive Transcript – I wish it were a news flash, but it’s not a news flash that the welfare state has replaced the charity state and the little laboratories of philanthropy and democracy that de Tocqueville saw when he came here back in the 1820s and 1830s and wrote a book about it called Democracy in America. I think the experiment was doomed to fail as soon as the first bow was breached. We can wax vainglorious all we want to about the magnanimity and the genius and brilliance of the founding fathers, but the fact of the matter remains that it’s their system that has become corrupted. Enough Already With The “USA! USA!” Jingoism, Let’s Try A Little Localism

Mandeville, LA – Exclusive Transcript – What we need is an alteration in manner of thinking. Manner of thinking today is jingoistic “USA! USA!” as opposed to localistic. I don’t want to say republican or individualistic because individualism is also part of what’s rotten at the core of society today. Daniel Larison has this intriguing post at The American Conservative Magazine last night, “Rejecting Jingoism and Groupthink.” Check out today’s transcript for the rest…

Patrick Deneen Asks A Great Question: “What Is An American Conservative?”

Mandeville, LA – Exclusive Transcript – There is an essay at The American Conservative Magazine website. [mocking] “Mike, you were hard on The American Conservative Magazine yesterday.” Yeah, well, I was just being honest. I don’t ask for jingoism from anyone else, so I don’t expect that anyone expects they’re going to get jingoism or Homerism from yours truly. In any event, The American Conservative Magazine’s Patrick J. Deneen posts what I think is an article -- this is not internet folly, not fantasy, not made up and comprised of a bunch of forwarded, hackneyed emails that aren’t true. The title of the piece is “What Is an American Conservative?” That is a great question. Check out today's transcript for the rest...

The Founding Fathers Left A Roadmap For Our Culture As Much As Our Politics

Mandeville, LA – Exclusive Transcript – Let me say to you something you won’t hear very many members of the talk radio mafia, a derisive name given to talk radio show hosts by Mary Anastasia O’Grady back in 2008 because radio hosts were refusing to endorse Senator McCain back then. I don’t believe that this juncture in the lives of Americans or of Western civilization in general is that much removed from the similar situations and juncture that were experienced by men of 1750 to 1820, by the men of 1800 to 1870, by the men of 1850 to 1920, by the men of 1910 to 1980, or by the men of 1920 (known as the greatest generation to those who have survived today) to this current generation. The Founding Fathers Denied The British Empire To Form The U.S. – Who Will Deny The American Empire?

Mandeville, LA – Exclusive Transcript – There was a grand ruler, King George III. He had his own legislative body, two of them. He had Parliament, the House of Lords and the House of Commons. They had English common law. They had an English court system, trials by jury. They had magistrates and constables and what have you. In other words, they had everything that a government would need and did need to administer the daily functions of an empire, and they did administer the daily functions of an empire. If you were in violation of the rules or laws of the crown, they could bring you up, have you hanged, have you thrown in the tower, imprisoned or sent to an isolation island, shipped over to Australia or whatever. Dennis Kucinich Says Abolish The NSA And Throw Snowden A Parade

Mandeville, LA – Exclusive Transcript – How many of you have used the term abolish in the last month? How many of you have thought of how to abolish, for example, the IRS, how to abolish the NSA? Around the time of the founders, when the Virginia Bill of Rights was written, principally by George Mason, the wisest man of his generation -- that’s what Jefferson called him -- there’s a clause in the Virginia Bill of Rights that says citizens have an indubitable, indefeasible, unalienable right to reform, alter, or abolish any form of government that has become destructive of the ends of society. James Madison On Taxes And Immigration

Mandeville, LA – Exclusive Transcript – I just found it really fortuitous that I stumbled upon this letter while watching the Snowden clip about the nobility of the federal government and that’s what it was that drew Edward Snowden to it, then tying the whole immigration part of this letter to our current pickle over said immigration, being able to then see that back in 1794, 1795, 1796, just years after the Constitution went into effect, members of the House of Representin’ and one of the most famous of all founding fathers found it necessary to guard against the admission of people that would not contribute to the good order and happiness of life under our new Constitution with newfound freedoms and liberties gained in the revolution. In 1798 Americans Resolved To Fight Tyranny – In 2013 It’s Sound Bites Then Silence

Mandeville, LA – Exclusive Transcript – If you’re a fan of nullification, you’re going to want to read this piece. From this little gathering in Fredericksburg, Virginia comes the inspiration for great things, which are the Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions, of course Kentucky written by Jefferson, Virginia written by Madison, both with an assist from Taylor of Caroline. The American Sheeple Have Been Asking For the Surveillance State

Mandeville, LA - Exclusive Video and Audio - Over the last 200 years, laws continue to become more complex and more hidden behind the curtain of secrecy of the American government. When the Alien and Sedition Act of 1798 was passed everyone knew what was in it, it was in the open, and because of that John Adams lost out to Thomas Jefferson in the next election. Fast forward to the War of Northern Aggression and while Lincoln is continuing his fight, the people of the Northern states knew what he was doing because Congress was doing it... out in the open. Going forward yet again to 1917 Woodrow Wilson gets us involved in WW1 and they pass the Espionage Act, but there was no question as to what was in it. There are many more examples throughout history but now, NOW they do everything behind closed doors, and no one has any idea what is in the acts and laws that they are passing, many of which are directed at spying and infringing on the rights of American Citizens. Mike Tells The Story Of June 1788 and The First Peaceful Transfer of Power

Mandeville, LA - Exclusive Transcript - We start off the New Year taking you back to the 25th of June. That is, the 25th of June in the year of our Lord 1788. It was on this date that in Richmond, Virginia in a place called 'The New Academy Of Sciences',which is now just a solitary bronze plaque tacked onto the wall of the hospital at Virginia Commonwealth University. The plaque proudly states that in this location the debate to ratify the Constitution was held. And this debate was the most thorough discussion of the Constitution, the most thorough exploration of the Constitution and finally it was the most reliable guide to the Constitution. This particular Virginia ratification debate there was actual debate, not to be confused with two minutes here and two minutes there - in fact, Patrick Henry once debated the ratification of the Constitution for a whole day. The reason why this is important is because without Virginia's ratification we wouldn't get New York to ratify - and without the two most populous and productive States then the rest of the Union would be screwed. If you don't already have your history on lock, then give Mike a listen to find out Virginia's outcome!

Despite What The History Books Say, John Quincy Adams WAS A Founding Father

Mandeville, LA – Exclusive Transcript – Milbank rebuffs Bachmann and makes fun of her because she mistakenly identified John Quincy Adams as a founding father. I tweeted this to Milbank and I’ll just reiterate this to the audience. John Quincy Adams WAS a founding father. He may not have been a father at the time of the founding, but he was most certainly a member of that august body of young men who would turn men who were in on the founding. James Madison Warns Of The Federal Monster

Mandeville, LA – Exclusive Transcript – The patriot ought to be the first one that raises his hand and says: We should be a beacon of peace and liberty to the world, and we should only rear our arms in our own defense, this existential own defense. What we’re doing abroad is unconscionable and would not be something that your average member of the founding father generation would sign off on. As a matter of fact, they would recoil in horror and shock from it, and I will prove it to you right now. Check out today’s transcript for the rest…

2nd Amendment Fight Isn’t The End, It’s The Wake-Up Call To Rethinking The Union

Mandeville, LA – Exclusive Transcript – When the Constitution was ratified, the guy who actually wrote the “We the people” script and actually wrote the four original parchment paper pages that hold the original text of the original Constitution, Gouverneur Morris, he went to his grave convinced that his grandchildren would not live in an American Union consecrated under a Constitution. It is nothing short of an absolute miracle or maybe a curse, depending on whose side you’re on, that we still remain together as 48 lower contiguous American states. Rep. Tom Cotton Wants An American War With Syria

Mandeville, LA – Exclusive Transcript – Why are members of the war party out there stumping for war in Syria? This is just perplexing and it’s so damn frustrating. I have this member of Congress, Tom Cotton, who is on Meet the Half-Court Press yesterday. “The United States should arm opposition fighters in Syria and create a no-fly zone over the war-torn nation,” Representative Tom Cotton (R-AR) said on NBC’s Meet the Press. What interest do the people of Arkansas have in us arming rebels in Syria? Check out today’s transcript for the rest…

Sales Taxes Go Way Back…And They’re Always A Bad Idea

Mandeville, LA – Exclusive Transcript – “Sales Tax: History of a Dumb Idea” by Mason Gaffney, this is part of my post. I found this wonderful essay written by Mr. Gaffney in Insights Magazine back in 2005 about sales taxes. He writes about the history of the sales tax. It goes way, way back, farther than you can ever imagine. Check out today’s audio and transcript for the rest…
