Mandeville, LA - Exclusive Transcript - Javier from Texas called in today and had a nice, gentlemanly conversation with Mike, here is a snippet of what he had to say about what he's learned from listening to the show, "When I tell people I’m conservative, and I usually use conservative more than Republican because of what I’ve learned from you, the little r versus the big R. I think I’m more conservative. They look at me like, “Why do you vote against your needs?” I think that’s the expression. I say to them it’s about knowledge and understanding. You guys are going by the propaganda that is being spelled to you. I’ll tell my black friends, how is it you’re telling me the Democrat Party is better for you when unemployment on blacks is even higher than unemployment on Hispanics. That’s the first black president not the first Hispanic president. I just don’t know how you fix that. When I talk to my friends, all they say is the same propaganda, verbatim, whether it’s Chris Matthews, Rachel Maddow or Stone Phillips, whoever is the person talking." Mike: This is Javier in Texas. Hello, Javier.
Caller Javier: Hey, Mike. Good morning. How are you doing?
Mike: I’m just fine.
Caller Javier: The reason I’m calling, actually two, but the first one is, in terms of the widening the chance??, it’s very difficult because I am a conservative. I’m a conservative Hispanic. When I talk to my friends, one of the things I realize, most Hispanics are conservatives. Their generation, because they spend so much time working, and a lot of Hispanics come illegally and I understand that issue, but they’re still here but they don’t take the time to teach those things to their kids. Their kids grow up in the public schools. When you have all this demographics of, I’m going to call them lies. One of the biggest problems I see with the minority communities, whether it’s black or Hispanics or whatever other minority group, is that this feeling that the Republican Party is racist.
When I tell people I’m conservative, and I usually use conservative more than Republican because of what I’ve learned from you, the little r versus the big R. When I talk to my friends, all they say is the same propaganda, verbatim, whether it’s Chris Matthews, Rachel Maddow or Stone Phillips, whoever is the person talking. Before you hang up, the other thing I did want to say is I’m reading that book you recommended, The Compleat Gentleman.
Mike: Really? Where did you get a copy at? It’s out of print.
Caller Javier: I got it at Amazon.
Mike: Oh, you got a used copy?
Caller Javier: Yeah, I got a used copy. It doesn’t have the cover.
Mike: I recommend, number one, in this order: Road to Independence, Fame of Our Fathers, Spirit of ’76, What Lincoln Killed. It’s a great audio or video version of the events from 1770 to about 1830. I recommend that book The Compleat Gentleman because he walks you through what made the great gentleman. He traces it all the way back to the Knights Templar. That’s a guy named Brad Miner. Yesterday I recommended, because people ask me for book recommendations all the time, just go to the library. Folks, we have a website for a freaking reason, for God’s sake. Click the Library tab. There’s only 150,000 books there, I’m exaggerating, that I’ve read and I recommend you read. I recommended Richard Weaver’s The Southern Tradition at Bay yesterday. That also is out of print, but you can find a used copy, they’re just really expensive. It’s because the book is rare. I’m looking for a digital version of that. I have yet to find one. I told Captain Picard yesterday, my videographer, that my copy of Southern Tradition at Bay cost me $125, and I bought it from a private collector that just happened to have three and he sold two of them. I just happened to get lucky. What are you finding in the The Compleat Gentleman that you like, Javier?
Caller Javier: What I found really, really good was the quest of the fidelity, the glory, all the things that really I think every man, every football player, you as a talk show, me as a worker here in the fields is lost because we are afraid to take a stand. That’s what I like the most, that concept that you have standards and you take a stand. I’ll tell a little story on this. You know how you were talking about suit and tie? I go to a large group for my church. I go to a predominantly white church, a Lutheran church. One day we’re talking and I look at all the men and I said, “You know what is the most embarrassing thing in the world? All you guys go to church in flip flops. You guys make good money. There is no reason for you to walk in church in flip flops. You wouldn’t do it at work and you wouldn’t do it for an interview. Here you go to a place of worship like you’re going to the beach. That is really a lack of standard.”
Mike: Or you’re going to a Jimmy Buffett concert.
Caller Javier: Exactly.
Mike: Dude, this is not Land Shark Theater. This is St. Margaret’s. That’s a good one. Sir, this is not the Land Shark Arena. This is St. Augustine’s.
Caller Javier: It goes back to what you were talking about, the fact that even people that are conservative have laxed down their standards. I always remember my dad and my grandfather. They never left the house without a tie, my grandfather without a hat. That kind of did go out of style.
Mike: It’s coming back. I never leave the house without a hat now.
Caller Javier: No, but I’m talking a real hat, like a top hat.
Mike: No, I wear fedoras. I have a collection of Stetsons. You know what I can’t find is it’s hard to find a real felt fedora, the actual Frank Sinatra fedora. I can find all the woven, fake fedoras made in China that you want, which I wear, but the real fedora is very difficult to come by. You’ve got to go to a specialty shop. If I want to go to one, I have to go all the way downtown to New Orleans to Jackson Square.
Caller Javier: You know the story of William Marshall in the book and how he got sick of the politics of the time. I think that’s what’s happening to a lot of people like you and me. There’s one thing you said that has stuck with me since you said it, and that was that people feel good, if they’re Republicans, they feel good if the president is Republican and they feel good if the president is a Democrat if they’re a Democrat. At no time they’re really seeing what the hell that party is doing for society as a whole. Anyway, I just was listening to your conversation and I found that really interesting.
I am a minority within my group of friends. It just perplexes me. Even the whole thing about What Lincoln Killed, when I bring that up, they look at me like I’m an [unintelligible 08:04], like I’m cussing. It’s the concept of individual space versus a centralized government that leads to basically our social government. Just the level of ignorance is so high, even within the Republicans, by the way. I think you put a lot of your people in place. I think you said it best yesterday. What assures us that this guy Romney is really going to do a better job? He’s just saying things. I want to vote for him because ObamaCare was modeled after RomneyCare, so at least he should know what’s wrong with it, at least be able to fix it.
Mike: He should.
Caller Javier: I don’t know why he doesn’t talk about that.
Mike: He did talk about it, Javier, but the problem was he talked about there are parts of it we’re not going to repeal, that are actually good. It used to be repeal ObamaCare, then it was repeal parts of ObamaCare. Now there are parts of ObamaCare we actually agree with. Even if you don’t mean it, stick with one message, we’re going to repeal ObamaCare.
