NYC Cannot Handle Its Own Weather Problems Without Federal Babysitting

The fact that there are eight million souls in New York City, maybe even nine million if you throw in all the boroughs around there, you mean to tell me there’s not enough brainpower there, not enough initiative, not enough genius there to figure out a way to govern yourselves and make your own emergency preparedness?  You have to outsource that to people that live and people that work inside Washington, DC. Mike:  Do you have any estimate on how long — did they tell you guys in Maryland how long you’re going to be without power this time or are you just anticipating it’s going to be a week?

AG:  I anticipate it’s going to be a couple days here.  It’s normally a couple trees fall down, knock down some wires and it takes a while to get them all back up.  We’ll see.  Seven million without power as a result of the storm, looks like most of it is north of here from beginning of upper Delaware up through New Jersey to New York.  Who knows?  They were at least prepared in terms of sending crews from all across the country to this region to get power back up and running, so maybe today, maybe tomorrow.  We’ll see.

Mike:  They were prepared.  That’s because the New York Times was on it.  They were all over it: “A Big Storm Requires Big Government.”

Disaster coordination is one of the most vital functions of “big government,” which is why Mitt Romney wants to eliminate it.  At a Republican primary debate last year . . .

Mike:  Does the New York Slimes not have any shame whatsoever?  People fleeing the eye of the storm as it descends on Lower Manhattan and Long Island and upper New Jersey, the New York Slimes said they want to inform people that are fleeing the storm that a guy that is running for the office of president that ought to have no say-so whatsoever over whether or not their local response — have you people in New York ever heard of the New York National Guard?  In New Jersey, have you ever heard of the New Jersey National Guard?  Have you ever conceived of the concept that maybe, if we didn’t have such a monstrous federal leviathan, you would have a New Jersey Corps of Engineers?  Yes, you would be prepared for this.  Can anyone ever truly completely prepare for an act of God?  That’s why it’s called an act of God.  No, we’ve got to assess blame here.  Men didn’t commit of other men’s resources that they wouldn’t voluntarily surrender to surround New York and New Jersey with levees and walls and emergency preparedness and national disaster plans.  Maybe acts of God are meant to be treated as acts of God.  Of course, in our scientific age, there’s no mystery left in life.  There’s nothing left that science can’t explain, nothing.

The Slimes editorial continues, “It’s an absurd notion, but it’s fully in line with decades of Republican resistance to federal emergency planning.”  If the New York Slimes would just stop and ask the question for a moment as to why a federal emergency planning response for a local problem is superior to local planning for the local problem itself.  Why would federal planning be superior?  It’s just a foregone conclusion that if the feds plan it, they’ve got smarter people.  Do they?  Really?  They know the lay of the land better than the people that actually live near the disaster?  This is the arrogance.  This is what leviathan does to otherwise normal men.  It corrupts and pollutes their thinking process.  They can’t think of these things in any other manner.  Of course those that were trained in East Coast universities near where this newspaper published are smarter than those — wait, those dunderheads actually live here.

It’s kind of funny, AG, that the elite center on the East Coast is where the New York Times is published.  There are eight million souls that call New York City proper home.  Do you really need or want for any government beyond what eight million people put together could administer, could vote for, supervise, circumscribe?  In Donald Livingston’s great book, which I’ve convinced a few of you to purchase, it’s called Rethinking the American Union.  The great Kirkpatrick Sale, one of the great writers still alive out there, in his chapter he walks you through international statistics that most Americans are just plain dumb and immune to.  That is that the average size of an economically viable or what we would say is a first-world country today, that the optimum size of a first-world economic, I don’t want to say superpower, is between six and seven million people, not 60 or 70, six or seven million.  The fact that there are eight million souls in New York City, maybe even nine million if you throw in all the boroughs around there, you mean to tell me there’s not enough brainpower there, not enough initiative, not enough genius there to figure out a way to govern yourselves and make your own emergency preparedness?  You have to outsource that to people that live and people that work inside Washington, DC — how far is DC from New York?

AG:  About four and a half hours driving, so 280, 300 miles.

Mike:  So 300 miles to your south, you have to outsource that?  Here’s the greatest irony of all ironies New York is in.  This is where the elites come from.  They’re educated at Columbia University in Manhattan.  They’re educated at Harvard and Yale, which are in Taxachusetts on the East Coast corridor there.  You raise these people but unless they have a federal badge of authority they’re not smart and wise enough to do emergency preparedness for natural disasters where they live?  Wow, life stinks.  Screw getting a helmet, you need to leave.  Get the hell out of New York while you can before these imbeciles kill you.  I just marvel at this.
