Our Politics Are Off The Tracks Because The Moral Train Has No Sight Of Those Tracks

Liberty the God that Failed smallMandeville, LA – Exclusive Transcript Many people think, and have based their entire adult political lives on the proposition that the Republican Party is where social conservatives and social conservatism has a home, and this is how we’re going to “take the country back.”  To the Dude Maker Hotline, this is our friend, author of Liberty, the God That Failed, Chris Ferrara, who is with us here this morning.”  Check out today’s transcript for the rest….

Mike:  Many people think, and have based their entire adult political lives on the proposition that the Republican Party is where social conservatives and social conservatism has a home, and this is how we’re going to “take the country back.”  We can take the country back because Republicans are conservative.  Not only are they conservative, they’re Christian conservatives.  We can ally with them and they’ll help us do things.  They’ll help us stop abortion and they’ll help us stop all the other moral atrocities around us.  Ladies and gentlemen, I’m here to inform you today that the Republicans are now participating in this gleefully.  It’s not just the aristocrats.  The Republican ranks of rank and file are now participating in this.

Before we go to Chris Ferrara, let me set this up.  Rod Dreher has a post at The American Conservative magazine website, “GOP Puts Social Conservatism on Ice Floe, Pushes.”  In other words, they put social conservatives on a slide and just said: Yeah, we’ll see ya.  We’re at the top of Mount Crumpit, to quote Dr. Seuss.  They just pushed us down.  Now we’re like the Grinch with the dog pulling the sled, down the ice floe we go.  Jeb and all the rest of the boys are up there waving: So long!  See ya!  What does he base this on?  There are a myriad of things you could base it on.

A large group of Republicans have signed a “friend of the court” brief supporting same-sex marriage. The conservative who tipped me off to this says:

“It’s quite the litany of GOP staffers, politicians, and consultants. It’s getting increasingly harder to contend that social conservatives have any home in the GOP. I think we’re in the process of transitioning from ‘useful idiots’ to ‘political liability.’ Social conservatives like to ask, ‘Why would you want a “bigot” to bake you a cake anyway?’ Well, why would you want to be part of liberal party anyway?

[private FP-Monthly|FP-Yearly|FP-Yearly-WLK|FP-Yearly-So76]

Let any social and religious conservatives who have eyes to see recognize that this list represents the GOP Establishment. You have likely heard of only a few of these folks, but the list represents the people who actually make the party work. The social liberals have won decisively. Let there be no more illusions. [Mike: Then he goes into some of the names that surprised him. One was Ben Domenech, the publisher of The Federalist, the site that I have been referring to of late but probably will not any longer.]

The young libertarian journalist Charles C.W. Cooke speaks truth here:

The Federalist: What about the broader concerns social conservatives have regarding the foundations of a strong civil society? What about the slippery slope argument surrounding gay marriage? How long before evangelicals are coerced to bake cakes at gay weddings or go out of business? Even if social conservatives accept federalist answers as a means of survival, it’s impossible to believe that progressives would have respect for process.

Charles Cooke: Well, I would say that traditional conservatives have no better friends on the question on conscience. If there should be any coalition in modern American politics that is ironclad, it should be that one. The real fight on the question of gay marriage is not over marriage anymore; that one has been lost. For better or for worse, the public opinion has reached a tipping point. The court is almost certain to rewrite the Fourteenth Amendment and pretend that it means something it doesn’t.

Charles_cw_CookeThat is to say the new problem is Brendan Eich. [Mike: Remember, he’s the former CEO of Mozilla and founder of Mozilla. They kicked him out because he supported Prop 8 in California. The Gaystapo got to him.] The new problem is Elane photography in New Mexico. And if libertarians can’t make their argument in favor of conscience rights and religious liberty to those conservatives, then they are hopeless. . .

[end reading]

Mike:  Folks, let me just tell you, libertarians can’t make this argument because they won’t base the argument on truth.  Well, Mike, what’s truth?  Truth is that there is a moral theology that is being wantonly disobeyed here.  One error leads to the next.  Now the only morality that we have is the morality that you can make up.  Morality now consists of, A, whatever I want to do, B, if it makes me happy, and C, if no one else gets hurt.  Well, how can one claim that no one else is being hurt or harmed when in society itself, we can all recognize that we’re in the proverbial handbasket and society is going to hell?  Of course people are being hurt.

Just as Our Lady told the children at Fatima: If you don’t do what I tell you to do, people are going to live to see a day in the not-too-distant future where souls will be falling into hell like snowflakes.  Ladies and gentlemen, it’s snowing.  We’re in the middle of a blizzard.  The political parties are proving themselves to be useless.  Why?  Because their order is incorrect.  [mocking] “We’ve got to have politics over religion.  We have to separate church and state.”  Wrong.  It’s an error.  It’s a horrible, horrendous error.  Who will stand to correct it?  My friends, very few.  We may see martyrs, physical martyrs in the very near future over this.  I asked the question once upon a time: What are they going to do, build Christian objector prisons?  Maybe, maybe.  This is a situation that informs the political situation.  This moral state informs the other states because it is the foundational state.  It’s the only one that matters.  From this moral state come our ethics.  Let me let you in on a little secret.  We don’t have any ethics.

To the Dude Maker Hotline, this is our friend, author of Liberty, the God That Failed, Chris Ferrara, who is with us here this morning.  Mr. Ferrara, as always, sir, thanks for appearing on such short notice.  I’m sorry you had to wait through my little monologue there, but I hadn’t set the subject matter up for us to discuss.  How are you?

Chris Ferrara:  I’m fine.  Listening to your monologue, I have to ask myself how anybody listening to your common sense diagnosis could disagree with it.  It’s the essence of simplicity.  The ultimate problem that’s confronting us is one of morality.  We’ve lost the moral basis for the life of this nation.  When you sent me that email last night about the Republicans signing onto the gay agenda and the plight of that minister in the Army who was essentially being fired for being a minister, you know what popped into my head?

Mike:  What’s that?

Ferrara:  Of all things, the lyric from a Jimi Hendrix song: Castles made of sand slip into the sea eventually.  Then I thought of the gospel of Matthew, moving from the profane to the sacred.  I’m thinking in particular of Chapter 7, Verse 24.  “Every one therefore that heareth these my words, and doeth them, shall be likened to a wise man, who built his house upon a rock.  And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and they beat upon that house, and it fell not: for it was founded on a rock.  And every one that heareth these my words and doeth them not shall be like a foolish man that built his house upon the sand.  And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and they beat upon that house, and it fell, and great was the fall thereof.”  That’s what we’re witnessing right now.  The castle made of sand is collapsing under the onslaught of all these errors that you’re talking about.

Pope_Leo_XIIIOur Lord talks about a rock.  You’ve been courageous in proclaiming what that rock is.  It’s the church.  Society needs a soul.  Pope Leo, in his encyclical Libertas, speaks about the relationship between church and state as that which can be likened to the relationship between a body and a soul.  Take away the soul from the body, what happens to the body?  It decomposes.  That’s what we’re seeing now with the Republican Party signing onto the gay agenda.  And in the Army, a Protestant minister can be discharged for cause because he preaches the gospel.

Mike:  And he said, when he was interviewed about this, that they went to him and basically asked him: Look, stop doing it and we’ll leave you alone.  He said: No, I can’t stop.  What do you mean stop doing it?  What did you hire me for, to tell you what you want to hear?  You hire me so you could tell me what morality is and I could repeat it back to you?  What in the world is going on here?  I understand it, but it becomes more frustrating by the day.  So let me see if I understand this.  We want to hire ministers to go minister to men in the armed services, and if they actually minister according to what the Truth is and what it has been held to be for 2,000 years, they’re fired.  But if someone walks into the room and tells the minister: Here, here’s the new truth.  You repeat this and repeat it back to my men and you’ll have a job here.  What the officer just handed the minister can’t possibly be the truth because it can be changed next week.  The truth will evolve.  It’ll be three men and a baby.  It’ll be four men and a baby.  That’s not Truth.  People don’t understand what Truth is.  I think this is the fundamental error.  Will you explain, when we say Truth, with a capital T, Truth is something that is eternal.  It doesn’t change.  That’s why it’s true, right?

Ferrara:  Let me give this advice to your listeners.  I don’t care whether you’re Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, atheist, whatever.  Get online and type in the word “Libertas” and the words “Leo XIII.”  Look up that encyclical.  Read it carefully.  You will see a prophecy of everything that has befallen this country, page after page of prophetic warnings about what is going to happen if people disregard the eternal law.  This is what God has revealed to us, first and foremost in the Ten Commandments.  These Commandments reflect the natural law.  And the natural law, because we are in a fallen condition, is obscured in the souls of many of us.  We all struggle with this.  It’s called concupiscence.  You need a corrective when you become obscured in your understanding of the natural law.  That corrective has to be the rock that Christ is referring to, on which the house is built that withstands the storm.  Otherwise, if you leave it to your own personal judgment or to a consensus of people in any church that people care to set up, you have the house built on sand.  It can’t withstand the storm.  That’s why the church was founded on a rock.

That rock, in the person of Leo XIII, in the encyclical Libertas, outlines what is going to happen if we accept the new paradigm of unlimited freedom of speech.  The paradox is, unlimited freedom of speech leads to tyranny.  Let me quote you something from this encyclical.  “Men have a right freely and prudently to propagate throughout the State what things soever are true and honorable…”  That’s fine.

[/private]

We all have the right to speak the truth, and the truth is a question for objective proclamation and verification, not personal opinion.  Then he goes on to say “…lying opinions, than which no mental plague is greater…,” for example, that babies should be killed in the womb, that men should marry each other, that pornography should be freely available, that you should be able to buy contraceptives at the local drug store, ad infinitum, “…and vices which corrupt the heart and moral life should be diligently repressed by public authority,  lest they insidiously work the ruin of the State.”

That sounds outrageous to modern ears, but look what is happening.  Leo predicts what is happening.  If you don’t repress evil opinions, evil opinions will become orthodoxy and then the true opinions will be repressed.  That is exactly what is happening, to this minister in the Army, to anyone now who dares to stand up to political correctness.  The issue is not whether the state will repress opinions.  That is going to happen no matter what.  The issue is whether the Truth will be defended and evil repressed, or whether evil will be defended and the Truth will be repressed.  The latter is what is happening today.

Here’s something else Leo said, “The excesses of an unbridled intellect, which unfailingly end in the oppression of the untutored multitude, are no less rightly controlled by the authority of the law than are the injuries inflicted by violence upon the weak.”  He’s saying that if you don’t control the spread of these evil opinions, they will come to predominate, the Truth will be the subject of persecution, and the “untutored multitude” will by tyrannized.  Isn’t that what’s happening?

Mike:  It’s exactly what’s happening.
