Mike:  … About Hobbes’ Leviathan book and why it’s so dangerous.  This book screwed the world up.  It ended the age of faith.  Descartes begins the process but Hobbes takes it and runs with it and then writes the book.  Of course, Hobbes denies that he writes the book and denies that he was trying to do because he doesn’t want — I think it was Pope Honorius — he didn’t want the pope to put him on the index of banned books.  They put it on the index anyway, but he doesn’t want to be a heretic.  That’s when heretic still meant something.  Of course, today it doesn’t because we have iPhones.  And we have 38,000 denominations and every man is his own pope and every man writes his own Magisterium, etc.  Natural law means nothing. Supernatural law, that’s a joke.  That’s something you find on television shows or old movies.  That doesn’t exist anymore.  Right, God has an expiration date.  What could possibly go wrong with thinking like that?

The point about Hobbes and Leviathan, about man killing man and the only way you’re going to survive — think about it, folks.  This is what gives rise to what you call capitalism today, and all the other errors of modernity.  What this gives rise to is: I’ve got to get to the piece of bread first.  If I’ve got to beat the crap out of the guy in order to get there first, that’s what I got to do.  Hobbes rejects that God’s grace and faith and fidelity to the natural law that God hands down to us, that that can stop the two neighbors from killing each other to get the piece of bread. I’m actually making the piece of bread scenario up.  He doesn’t use that.  Read it at MikeChurch.com.  I did an audio Project ‘76 webisode on this.  It’s in your Founders Pass if you’re a member, and why wouldn’t you be a member to support all the great work that we do at MikeChurch.com?

At the time that Hobbes is writing in the early 16th century, folks, there is no nation-state, not like we know it today.  It doesn’t exist.  Have there been empires — [mocking] “What about the Roman Empire?  What about that, you idiot?  You’re wrong.”  Of course I am.  That’s why I host a radio show, so I can be wrong all day long and pursue falsehoods instead of truth.  They weren’t composed or constituted as the nation-state today is.  They simply weren’t.  It’s just fallacy to believe that they were because they weren’t.  There were emperors and there were Caesars and there were dictators and there were kings and there were shahs, if you’re Muslim and into that whole Muhammad thing.  They didn’t have nation-states.  They didn’t have the civil religion that is the State.

What Leviathan is about is, since there is no God, since he’s denying that there is a God, there is no natural law that we can rely upon because we can’t know this reality.  How are we going to stop neighbor A from killing neighbor B?  We’re going to have to erect government.  Government is going to have to grow very strong and powerful to stop the two neighbors from killing each other to get the piece of bread.  This is where the term leviathan comes from.  If you look at the engraving that Hobbes made to go along with his book, you’ll see Leviathan is a menacing-looking man that kind of looks like half-man, half-Kraken.  Look closely at what makes the man.  The Leviathan monster is made up of little monstrous eyeballs.  This is the all seeing eye of government.

That gave rise to the idea that: Wait a minute now.  These kings also said, they also try to run us.  They also try to tell us that they’re the law and they’re following natural law.  Why do I have to believe them?  That’s what causes Locke — the irony is that Locke is rebelling against a Protestant creation, which is what he called the divine right of kings.  And that wasn’t around prior to all this either.  This is what causes Locke to go: Why do I have to obey the king?  If I don’t have to obey the other natural law and the other King of Kings, why do I have to obey that guy?  What are we going to replace him with?

This is not to say that republicanism is not a good idea and you can’t base a government on it, because I would never say that, because I don’t believe that is true.  However, pure republicanism, pure constitutionalism — when you people say, [mocking] “We’ve got to get back to the Constitution,” that’s not going to fix anything.  If you don’t get the rest of the order correct, if the natural law guided by and answerable to the supernatural law is not restored as the primary lawgiver in a system under which that natural law is . . .
