Mandeville, LA – “We are all Parisians now” says the average, indignant, literary screed aimed at the barbaric ISIS heretics. Wait, how did the word heretic get in here, we’re now at war against the “religion of peace”, what does The Inquisition have to do with it? Here’s a newsflash: the war against Islam never ended instead Christian Crusaders gave up the fight, content to allow the super-power, super-states to handle the task with vast standing armies and exotic weaponry. Swords, shields, Faith, Rosaries and the Ave Maria need not apply. The heirs of Robespierre think waging a literary war with the heretics via Charlie Hebdo and Twitter can put the evil at bay, well, the carnage of the last week stands as a testament to that campaign’s failure now and catastrophic prospects. The eminent historian Hilaire Belloc predicted all this in the 1930’s and he did so by reminding his countrymen, viz citizens of that eternal city written of by St Augustine as The City of God:
“I shall later describe the historical origin of the thing, giving the dates of its progress and the stages of its original success. I shall describe the consolidation of it, its increasing power and the threat which it remained to our civilization. It very nearly destroyed us. It kept up the battle against Christendom actively for a thousand years, and the story is by no means over; the power of Islam may at any moment re-arise.” – emphasis mine-MC
The immediate reaction to the Paris attacks has been to marshall the armies of Europe and the United States into a full scale assault on ISIS, ostensibly by some sort of Syrian invasion. According to the non-profit, In Defense of Christians group, the response to Paris and ISIS in general should be swift, secular and political.
“IDC calls on the Obama administration to use all means at its disposal to work with the international community to end the ISIS occupation of portions of Iraq and Syria and create political conditions for the displaced citizens of those countries to return to their homes. IDC further condemns any nation, organization, or individual giving material and financial support to ISIS in Syria, Iraq, and elsewhere, and calls upon the international community to be identify and prosecute those parties. ” – emphasis mine – MC
Note the absence of calling upon the most powerful force in the universe, Almighty God and his Church here on Earth. This cannot be the answer modern Christians provide because to do so requires an acknowledgement that, like in the age of Christendom, there is but one unified, Holy Church around whose teaching and ruling Authority the campaign must be based. This is the pluralism that has brought about the current conditions and places humanity on the precipe of the next age of Islam. This is not to single out IDC because they are parroting the impotent response offered by the Vatican itself. To understand the looming war, who are its generals and under what conditions it must be fought to obtain victory, we need to know at least some of the history of Islamic war against the Catholic Church. Again, let’s turn to Belloc for some narrative. At the dawn of Islam, what were the conditions, nascent Christendom existed under?
“By A.D. 630 all Gaul had long been Catholic. The last of the Arian generals and their garrisons in Italy and Spain had become orthodox. The Arian generals and garrisons of Northern Africa had been conquered by the orthodox armies of the Emperor. It was just at this moment, a moment of apparently universal and permanent Catholicism, that there fell an unexpected blow of overwhelming magnitude and force. Islam arose quite suddenly. It came out of the desert and overwhelmed half our civilization.”
To understand precisely what Islam is/was and what we are up against, Belloc informs modern Christians of an inconvenient Truth: Islam is a heresy of the highest order. Again, to acknowledge it as heretical is totally incompatible with the purely secular and military response to the threat that moderns, practicing their own destructive heresy of modernity, are mostly unwilling and largely unable to admit. Belloc had no such delusions.
“Mohammedanism was [is] a heresy: that is the essential point to grasp before going any further. It began as a heresy, not as a new religion. It was not a pagan contrast with the Church; it was not an alien enemy. It was a perversion of Christian doctrine.”
This is a far cry from the tri-colored patriotism displayed by the outraged Facebook and Twitter masses. Islam is but a threat to movie-going, porn addiction and “human rights”; in sum, it is viewed as a heresy against the iPhone world when in fact it is a full frontal assault that has as its prize, millions of souls claimed for the prince of Gaia. If you think this is but the ramblings of a Catholic conquistador, longing for a return of Catholic France, you are correct on one of those points. It is the Church and her ultimate weapon, it’s King and His power that can defeat Islam. The great irony is, the Islamics do not deny this while the neo-Christians do. Belloc puts a fine point on this.
“Millions of modern people of the white civilization, that is, the civilization of Europe and America, have forgotten all about Islam. They have never come in contact with it. They take for granted that it is decaying, and that, anyway, it is just a foreign religion which will not concern them. It is, as a fact, the most formidable and persistent enemy which our civilization has had, and may at any moment become as large a menace in the future as it has been in the past.”
Belloc’s conclusion was even more succint indeed, prophetic.
“The final fruit of this tenacity, the second period of Islamic power, may be delayed: but I doubt whether it can be permanently postponed.”
Islam has arisen again as the gravest threat the Christian people of the world face. Can armies and missiles and drones keep it at bay? That is a military question that cannot be answered with any certainty but drawing upon the examples of Crusades I and II; LePanto, Vienna and Malta, and dozens of other victories won by Christendom, without Christian, consecrated soldiering, no. Certainly not for the point that the purpose of Man’s sojourn on earth is to avoid heresy and guide our souls through the Narrow Gate of Our Lord’s Gospels. Sadly you won’t find this motivation and apostolate flowing through the outraged masses and unlike Satayana’s adage, we do know the history and refuse to repeat it. Consider the Mohammedan as the flesh-based version of the Terminator.
