Mike:  A sad story to begin today’s broadcast, looking at the news digest.  A very sad story out of Mississippi today.  A pair of Roman Catholic nuns were murdered in a home in Holmes County, Mississippi.  As if a pair of nuns being killed is not bad enough, these were sweet, little, old lady nuns, 64 and 66 years old.  It’s just a tragedy.  I just thought I would start with this, seeing all the trouble and trauma in the world today.  Mark talking about the babies that are going to be killed in Oklahoma today.  There’s going to be a couple dozen babies killed here in Louisiana today via abortion.  We underestimate the scope of this holocaust.  Abortion is not the only way to kill babies.  Abortion is not the only part of the culture of death.  You also have to throw in – and modern society won’t do this because we want people to listen to our shows and no one likes to hear the actual truth.  You need to throw contraception in with the abortion question.

Folks, they’re one and the same.  God’s in charge and he knows what he’s doing.  He doesn’t like you monkeying around with the life-creating process.  Do it at your – we do it at our own peril, and we do it at our own civilizational peril.  No one – as a matter of fact, I think that it is probable that the abortion question is actually palatable to many precisely because of the contraception.  [mocking] “Look, contraception used to be illegal, too.  Nobody did that.”  It was all the way up to the Lambeth Council in 1931.  Anyway, so much death, mayhem, and destruction out there, we often overlook that there is good.  There is good.  There is the good, the true, and the beautiful.  We always need to fine it.  We can’t just load our shows up with the mayhem and misery and despair.  We can’t always be gloom and despair.  There is sweetness in life.  It’s not always rainbows and gumdrops and gilded yellow-brick roads.  They are out there.

How can I say that when I’m talking about a pair of nuns in Mississippi murdered?  The women were found in this home by the cops yesterday.

When officers arrived they found the bodies of two elderly women.

The women had been identified as Sister Margaret Held and Sister Paula Merrill.

They were nuns in the Catholic Church and nurse practitioners at the Lexington Medical Clinic.

Father Greg Plata, who knew the women well and was a friend to the victims, “Naturally we are deeply hurting on this but these are two women of great faith of the gospel. They came here to Mississippi to outreach to the poor using their medical services.

Mike:  That says a lot.  They were 64 and 66 years old.  Thanks to young Christopher for sending me this story.  I was telling Christopher earlier when he sent me the story, read all the way down to the end of the story.  This is the good, the true, and the beautiful part.  Those nuns, those women touches people’s lives in an important, good, true, and beautiful way.  I’d like to read this to you because I think it’s important.  The governor Mississippi issued a statement on this.  When I die, Governor John Bel Edwards is not going to issue a statement about me.  When most of us die, governors of our states do not issue statements about us.  In this instance, Governor Phil Bryant did.  That says a lot.

[reading]

Governor Phil Bryant issued this statement:

“In regards to the two nuns killed today in Durant, my heart is broken for the two families and friends of these treasured souls. The Mississippi Department of Public Safety has begun their investigation and we will not rest until we find the murderer and bring them to justice. Please pray for all those that have been affected by this horrific crime.”

Mike:  That’s the governor of the great State of Mississippi.  Two nuns died, are killed, and the governor issues a statement, a beautiful statement.  The good, the true, the beautiful is out there, folks.  Do you think that the sisters were famous?  Do you think that they were wealthy?  Do you think they had great 401k plans?  Were they driving around in the fanciest cars that you can buy at a car dealership in Mississippi?  Or were they just humble servants of Christ, doing what it is that he commanded all of us to do?  Don’t go hiring the Red Cross to do it; you go do it.  Yesterday I read you the story about St. King Louis IX, about how he had this dinner for the poor and invalid or disabled.  He actually attended the dinner and fed the blind himself.  He picked fish off the bones for those who couldn’t do it and actually fed it to people.  The good, the true, and the beautiful is out there.  Is it any coincidence that it’s usually, when we see it it’s usually linked to God’s creation and the beauty of nature and our world with the wonder of a child.  Just think about that.

I was introduced to a mushroom last night that I didn’t even know grew in Southeast Louisiana, and Southern Mississippi as well.  I wish I could remember the name of it.  It was quite a tasty one because Chef Dan sautéed one up for me.  It was a beautiful – I thought it was a flower but it was a mushroom.

Anyway, the story continues, though.  It’s not just the governor.  Mississippi’s Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann issued a statement as well: “Lynn and I grieve the loss of Sisters Paula Merrill and Margaret Held, who were found violently killed in their home in Durant, Mississippi, this morning. Unbridled love and care for mankind has been met with unparalleled savagery. These faithful nuns worked tirelessly at the Lexington Medical Clinic to make the Holmes County community and Mississippi a better place to live. We hope justice will be swiftly served.”

Folks, that doesn’t happen in a vacuum.  That isn’t something that just crops up.  Those women served people their entire lives, it seems.  They served people, it seems also, without care for themselves.  Yet someone murdered them.  Someone is now driving their stolen vehicle, young Christopher informs me.  That’s the latest on the case, that their car was stolen and the cops now think it was a robbery.

Founders-Pass-Logo-500Just think about that when you think about how much we’re achieving in our secular lives, how much we’re achieving by the amount of zeros after the totals of our 401k or IRA or current bank accounts or salaries.  How many people today are going to look at their paychecks and go: Well, I could make more if Trump was president.  Could you make a larger impact by following God’s commandments and not worrying about what Fox News and conservatives crave?

I’m touched by this story and pray for the repose of the souls of Sister Margaret Held and Sister Paula Merrill.  Good will come out of this; it always does.  I bet if either of the sisters survived, one of the first things they would say when they catch the perp: I forgive you.  As Christ forgives all of us, I forgive you.  I just wanted to bring this up.  It is not in today’s Pile of Prep yet, but I will see to it that it gets into today’s Pile of Prep.
