Mike:  Jerry in Oklahoma is next on Free Phone Friday.  Hello, Jerry, how are you doing?

Caller Joey:  It’s Joey.  How are you doing?

Mike:  Joey.  Sorry about that.  Hello, Joey.

Caller Joey:  You doing all right?

Mike:  I’m fine, sir.  I’m well.  Thank you.

Caller Joey:  Yeah, I was always taught that Jesus loved everybody and let God decide who’s doing what in the afterlife, about homosexuality.  All you have to do is tolerate them.  Being pushed upon, I don’t -– we’re taught to love.  I was raised Catholic.  We’re taught to love everybody.  On that fact, if you’re worried about what’s happening here — all you have to worry about is the afterlife.  All you have to do is believe in God, believe in Jesus, and that’s the end.

Mike:  Really?

Caller Joey:  Whatever happens here happens here.

Mike:  I don’t have to do any works, don’t have to do any atonement for any mortal sin that I might commit?  Just love God is all I’ve got to do?

Caller Joey:  That’s what I was taught.

Mike:  Really?  Well, you were taught incorrectly, sir.  I hate to break it to you.  And this is not me speaking because I didn’t do the teaching and I didn’t write it.  I’ll acknowledge it and I’ll humiliate myself.  Even though I wish to send — you know, Jerry, every day I want to sin, brother.  There’s not an hour that goes by that some little demon like in the Animal House movie is not on my shoulder going: Do it!  There’s not an hour that goes by that I say: No, I don’t want to do it.  Please, grace.  I need grace.  I’m going to do it.  No, not going to do it.  I want to sin every day.  I try to prevent myself from sinning.  I hope that through public expositions like this that other people do the same thing.  So we’re not supposed to worry about it?  We’ll let God sort them out?

Let me ask you a question.  If we let God sort them out, why did he tell those twelve guys, those apostles, why did he tell them to go out and preach all these things to these nations?  Why did he tell them: Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven?  What in heaven’s name could he possibly have meant by that — I realize he was just Jesus.  Some people even deny that the name Jesus exists, or that there was a crucifix that actually existed.  What could he have possibly meant by that if he was not talking about remission of sins?  If he was talking about remission of sins, he must have been talking about sinners.

This idea here that we can all be our own pope and we can all be our own bishop and we all get to pick a book up and go: I like that verse there and I’m going to do that one because that’s what it says.  There’s a body of it.  It’s called the mystical body.  It takes far more humility and requires far more graces to subject yourself and say: Even if, in my feeble, insignificant, mortal mind, even if I were to concur with all the things that are thrown at all of us every day, all these hedonistic things, all this interpretation of this and this interpretation of that, even if I just say: Okay, you guys are all right.  Fine, fine.  I would still err on the side of outright, utter, mortal fear from the wrath of God.

As the harlot at the well, as the adulteress was told by our Lord, go and sin no more.  He didn’t say: If you go over there and while I’m gone say that you believed I was here, that’s cool.  He said: Go and sin no more.  If he admonished her not to sin, then there must be a reason.  There must have been a repercussion if she did not heed what he said.  I’m just going to try and err on the side of caution and on the side that I simply don’t know some things.  It’s just mysterious.  Some things are just mysterious.  This why we take them on articles of faith.

It’s amazing, I got a piece of hate mail from a guy yesterday about the evolution show, that Darwin was wrong.  I’ll read part of it to you.  You want to hear something?  Listen to this.  You called and I get accused of bringing this stuff up all the time.  I didn’t bring it up.  The guy called.  I didn’t tell him to call.  He called.  “Mike – Your show today demonstrated an appalling lack of understanding of evolution and of science in general.  The process of science is about asking questions, testing hypotheses, and arriving at conclusions based upon data.”  Okay, who denied that, sir? “It is also about saying we don’t know the answers where appropriate.”  Okay, who denied that?  That’s pretty much what Ferrara and I said.
