Donald in Texas Would Rather Secede and Deal With His Own Problems… Sounds Like federalism To Me

Mike:  Donald is in Texas next.  Hello, Donald.

Caller Donald:  Hello, Mike, how are you doing?

Mike:  Good, thank you.

Caller Donald:  I’ve been listening to your show.  I want to tell you, you always make some really good arguments and use a lot of facts.  I appreciate that.  That’s going to lead into my point.  You lay out a lot of rational ideas.  You bring up a lot of facts in your statements and on your show.  This is what I tell some of my friends, and I’m going to tell you today, the people on the left or the Democrats or whatever you want to call them today.  I call them “those people.”  Those people up there in Washington, DC, they don’t care about facts.  They don’t care about logic and reason.   You’re not going to reason with them.  They’ve already got it in their head that they’re going to do something whether you like it or not.

Here’s my idea: why not secession?  Just as I would not tolerate a senator or legislature, a branch, two or three states in this union dominating the rest of the 47, why should we tolerate here in Texas people like Dianne Feinstein trying to tell us how we’re going to live here, out in California telling us how we’re going to live here in Texas?  In my opinion, I look at Washington, DC these days and I don’t ask myself if these people are lawmakers.  I ask myself if these people are Americans.  I don’t believe they are.  If they’re not Americans, then I don’t want to be part of this anymore.  I would rather just be a Texan.

Mike:  Maybe you’re looking at it from the wrong point of view.  Maybe they are nationalistic Americans.  Maybe they do desire hegemony from Key West to Spokane, Washington, from Bangor, Maine all the way down to Baja, California.  Maybe that’s the problem there.  Maybe that’s the problem.  They want to divide all their problems and difficulties up and have all the rest of us participate in the elusive solutions for those problems.  Maybe you’ve identified that you’d rather just deal with your problems as they exist in Texas.  Maybe you’ve identified that you’d rather deal with your problems as they exist in Cleveland County or Liberty, Texas, or Harris County, Texas or Arlington or El Paso or San Antonio or Amarillo or somewhere out in Lampasas.

What you’re basically describing to me is that you desire a return to a very healthy and energetic form of federalism, which is what you could have under a federal system as envisioned and ordered by the U.S. Constitution.  Unfortunately, that is not what we currently have.  There is an attempt at federalism but it’s abandoned all too easily.  There are a few people that are actually dedicated and devoted to it.  I’d say that in the national legislature, there are probably less than ten percent of the people that are dedicated to the proposition that the Constitution lays out for a federal system of government.  You get Americans.  Maybe they do believe they’re Americans.  I’ve become more and more animadverted towards the opinion that if you are not a Louisianan first or not a Texan first, then you are a Lincolnian.  I would say that the Lincolnians have the majority.

The point of view that you’re expressing to me is that you are a Jeffersonian.  This is at the start, by the way, of What Lincoln Killed: Episode I – Director’s Edition.  Go download yourself a copy today.  It’s the first scene.  There are two kinds of Americans: Jeffersonians and Lincolnians.  The Jeffersonians have remained true to the order of things, which is that the states created the general government to serve them.  The states didn’t create, the representatives and the people of the states didn’t create the federal government to torment us, didn’t create the federal government to steal from us, didn’t create the federal government to divvy up the spoils of trillions of dollars, didn’t create it to wage never-ending wars on foreign peoples.  They created it because, it’s in the preamble, for the common defense, promote the general welfare and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity.  When it becomes destructive of those ends, when it has violated its end of the agreement, when it has violated the compact, then it is no longer a legal or legitimate government.  The people of Texas are legally entitled to sever that bond if you choose to.

Unfortunately for you, Donald, there are hundreds of billions of dollars at stake of borrowed money that Rick Perry and your legislature can partake of as long as there is this life and this alleged union — it’s not a union because we’re told we can’t leave it — under the Constitution.  Until such time as the State of Texas and its citizens are animated to hold a convention in whatever city they may determine and resolve to determine their own political fate, that they no longer care to be bound to the federal government any longer, this is what you shall suffer under.  There is no remedy for it.  There is obviously no federal remedy for it.  There is obviously nothing that is going to happen or transpire inside the states that’s going to stop it.  Until we say it’s over and the union is no more as it is currently consecrated, this is what you’re going to get.  Get used to it.

Caller Donald:  That may be so.

Mike:  He resigns himself.

Caller Donald:  Me personally, I’m done with it.

Mike:  I’m glad to hear that you’re done with it because that makes you a Jeffersonian.  Union is not a bad thing, though.  This is what I caution people.  Secede and then do what?  You’re still going to be stuck with corrupt politicians, corrupt people that believe it is their entitled station in life to partake of the fruits of labor that another man has earned.  We’re not all going to resolve ourselves that it is our souls and our culture that is equally as corrupt as our politics are.  I believe the politics are a symptom of the cultural corruption and the corruption of the soul.  I think you’re just going to have smaller tyrannies.  Are they to be preferred to a large tyranny?  I don’t know.  Freedom, the quest for freedom and republicanism are not without risks.  You can’t say if we secede all is going to be well.  You don’t know that.  It is a very risky proposition.  I am up to the challenge.  I’m willing to give it a go like you.  I’ve had it with it as well.  Evangelize that to your fellow citizens.

Caller Donald:  How much worse could it get?

Mike:  It could get worse.

Caller Donald:  I don’t know about that, though.  I would rather be ruled by a tyrant that was born here in Texas than a tyrant in Sacramento, California or a tyrant in New York City or a tyrant in Ohio or a tyrant in Florida.  Do you understand?  Our country is being held hostage by three states in the electoral college.  You understand that.

Mike:  I do.

Caller Donald:  We have a media that is not interested.  That’s why I have satellite radio.  We have a media that’s not interested in being fair.  They don’t care about the facts.  We have institutions, colleges — I went to one, a very liberal one.  They are not interested in the facts.  They just want you to regurgitate the Marxism.  They want you to regurgitate the egalitarianism that they throw out there in order for you to get your A and walk across that stage in four years.  They’re interested in brainwashing.  You get out here in this world and realize that all that nonsense they talked about, it only exists in a controlled environment.  If you want to live free, their philosophies don’t make any sense.  Even in their socialist system, you’ve got to constantly walk around trying to find somebody to knock you in the head to take what they’ve got to fund your agenda.  That’s what they want.  They’re not going to settle for anything else.

Here’s the thing: I’m a military vet.  I served nine years, almost ten.  I have no interest, no further interest in the federal government.  I would not work for them.  I don’t want to serve in their military.  I don’t want my sons serving in their military.  I think it’s time for us to go our separate ways.  The people that want to live as communists or socialists or liberals or whatever they’re calling themselves, progressives, let them be free to do so in California.  Let them be free to do so in New York City.  Let them be free to do so in Florida.  Let us be left alone.  Leave us alone.  I think most Texans would agree with that.  I think we wonder often: Why can’t these people just leave us alone?
