This Day In Founding Fathers History – 29 November 2012

On this day in 1776, a Waterbury, Connecticut newspaper published the following account of local volunteers marching to New York, “It consists of 24 men; their ages, added together, are a thousand years. They are all married men, and when they came from home, left behind their wives, with 149 children and grandchildren…A worthy example of patriotism. Let others go and do likewise.” 1

In 1775 on this day, the Continental Congress established a Committee of Secret Correspondence to provide communication of Patriot efforts to garner foreign support. “Resolved, That a committee of five be appointed for the sole purpose of corresponding with our friends in Great Britain, Ireland, and other parts of the world, and that they lay their correspondence, and for the payment of such agents as the said Committee may send on this service.” The members chosen for the committee were Benjamin Harrison, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Johnson, John Dickinson and John Jay. 2
