Preston, Lancashire, England – Few saints of ancient England match the accomplishments of Saint Welburge; Saint Walburga’s Catholic Church in England is thus a fitting devotion to her holy life but alas, the ancient abbess’s lair is in need of serious repair.
So eminent was the spirit of evangelical charity, meekness, and piety, which all the words and actions of St. Walburge breathed, and so remarkable was the fruit which her zeal and example produced in others, that when St. Winebald died, in 760, she was charged with a superintendency also over the abbey of monks till her death.
Thus begins the Reveren Alban Butler’s description of Saint Walburge, niece of Saint Boniface. I had the occasion to tour this magnificent, Jesuit built facility and discuss its history and current renovation with my historia-tour guide, Michael Durnan.
