This Day In Founding Fathers History – 27 November

On this day in 1776, General Washington wrote to Major General Lee from Newark, “My former Letters were so full and explicit, as to the necessity of your marching as early as possible, that it is unnecessary to add more on that Head. I confess I expected you would have been sooner in motion. The force here, when joined by yours, will not be adequate to any great opposition. At present it is weak; and it has been more owing to the badness of the weather, that the enemy’s progress has been checked, than to any resistance we can make. They are now pushing this way; part of ‘em have passed the Passaic. Their plan is not entirely unfolded, but I shall not be surprised, if Philadelphia should turn out the object of their movement. The distress of the troops for want of cloathes I feel much; but what can I do?”

One notable birthday on this day in history in 1746, that of Robert R. Livingston, a lawyer, known as “the Chancellor.”  Livingston served as a delegate from New York at the Continental Congress, helping draft the Declaration of Independence but leaving before it was signed. Livingston was the first U.S. Secretary of Foreign Affairs and first Chancellor of New York, serving for nearly 25 years. He later served as U.S. Minister to France.
